But as Elves progresses, Jose goes missing to track the youngling, Kee-ko, and her parents end up bringing the fence down to find the girl. This is none other than Karen (Ann Eleonora Jørgensen), the matriarch of the island and the woman in charge of ensuring the dozens of folks living there remain part of this close-knit commune, which is essentially a nature cult. It's been their job to sacrifice cows to the elves, who are underground and barricaded in by an electric fence. But while it seems like the mythical creatures that emerge from a forest reserve are the threat to fear, the series' real monster is actually human. However, after Jose quickly discovers the existence of an elf youngling, nursing it back to health after her family's jeep hit it, things start to go awry as they discover that the island holds a much darker secret. In Netflix's Danish horror series, Elves, Josefine, aka Jose (Sonja Steen), and her family arrive on a mysterious remote island, Årmandsø, to spend Christmas together after school and work had everyone growing apart over the year. WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Elves, now streaming on Netflix.
